Fulton Sheriff Wants 550 New Hires To End Court Oversight

first_img For Whom The Bell Rings Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson says he needs to hire 550 new people to finally end nearly a decade of federal oversight of its jails. As heard on the radio0:43In a motion filed in federal court Tuesday evening, Jackson said he needs to hire 339 new deputy sheriffs and 211 new detention officers in the next four years in order to maintain staffing at mandated levels under a long-standing federal consent decree. The county has been under court supervision since 2005 to fix low staffing, overcrowding and faulty locks at its main jail. The agreement was part of a court settlement between the county and the Southern Center of Human Rights, which sued in 2004 on behalf of an inmate. The Sheriff’s office declined an interview to talk about specifics. The court document didn’t give a cost estimate for the new hires, but Jackson said the Board of Commissioners in January approved $100 million for personnel and equipment. It’s unclear whether that money would cover the hires.Jackson said the goal is to have Fulton County in compliance with the court by the end of the year. I asked psychologists to analyze Trump supporters. This is what I learned.

first_imgThe Washington Post:ALL him whatever names you like. A clown. A Know Nothing. A political greenhorn who can barely complete a sentence. A nativist, a racist and — worse — a New York liberal with a comb-over. You can call him a blowhard if you want, but — to the consternation of the conservative elite and to the surprise of just about everybody else inside the Beltway — Donald Trump won’t blow off.…Still, he is an effective speaker, psychologists say. In fact, decades of research show that charisma has more to do with a person’s demeanor than what he or she is saying, says Stanford University’s Jeffrey Pfeffer. In one series of well-known experiments conducted by the psychologists Nalini Ambady and Robert Rosenthal, subjects were able to predict how students in a college classroom would evaluate their teachers at the end of the term, based on 30 seconds or less of soundless footage of the instructor. The subjects in the study couldn’t hear the words coming out of the instructor’s mouth, but what mattered for the students was gesture and affect, not substance.   Read the whole story: The Washington Post More of our Members in the Media >last_img read more

Port of Rotterdam, TPK Logistica to Develop a New Port in Brazil

first_imgOn 29 April the Port of Rotterdam Authority and TPK (Terminal Presidente Kennedy) Logistica signed a joint venture agreement in Vitória, Brazil for the development of Porto Central, a new port in Brazil. TPK Logistica is owned by a group of Brazilian companies with a great deal of experience in the mining, construction and offshore sectors. The ‘greenfield’ port will be built in the southernmost part of the state of Espirito Santo in the industrial heart of Brazil. It will be an industrial deep sea port for the handling of oil, gas, dry bulk, containers and general cargo. The port will also serve as a support centre for the strongly growing offshore sector. In the coming time, the already existing market interest will be specified and the required permits will be obtained. The Port Authority’s main role will be providing its extensive expertise and knowledge in the field of port development. An investment decision will not be made until a later stage.Approximately 30 million tonnes of cargo is transported yearly between Brazil and the port of Rotterdam, with iron ore traditionally far and away the major cargo type. This makes the port of Rotterdam the most important European port for Brazil.Other Brazilian cargo which comes to the Netherlands includes oil products, basic chemical products and fruit juices. Meat, fruit and car parts are good for containerised cargo. Brazil is one of the BRIC countries ( emerging national economies referring to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). With its natural riches and aged port infrastructure, the country offers great potential for port development. The Port Authority has been operating in Brazil since 2010, when it was asked by the Brazilian government to advise on a strategic study into remodelling the Brazilian port sector, which consists of 34 public ports along the 8,000-kilometre coastline. The Port Authority has had its own office in São Paulo since 2012, but it plans to continue to provide intensive support for the joint venture in Vitória from Rotterdam as well. Four Port Authority employees currently work in Brazil.[mappress]Port of Rotterdam, April 30, 2014last_img read more
