Annual meeting of minds

first_imgThe Annual National Conference of the Australian Hellenic Council took place on Tuesday 21 June. The council discussed various issues that were relevant to Hellenes in Australia and the wider diaspora and put together a list of recommendations to take to the Australian Government. Greek migration to Australia was discussed at great length, with the council coming up with a list of recommendations to assist the process. One of the recommendations was to introduce an Australian Skills Expo in Greece to be held in the coming months as they do in the United Kingdom. This will provide an opportunity for skilled and qualified Greeks interested in working in Australia to speak to potential employees and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Also, the council will recommend to the Australian Government to include Greece in the Working Holiday Visa Program. Other issues discussed at the conference included Greek language in Australia; Cyprus; Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia; Parthenon Marbles; the Theological College of Halki and religious freedom in turkey; the Christian genocide of Anatolia; Battle of Crete; Southern Albania / Northern Epirus; the Australian Greek elderly; joint statement of Prime Minister Julia Gillard and President Demetris Christofias; and the affiliate organisations of the Australian Hellenic Council.
