Rugby League BY KEVIN TEME Central Dabaris Rugby League franchise club will be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Digicel Cup challenge given the outlook of the team after its first trial hit-out at the Bava Park yesterday. The Dabaris played a trial match against last year’s grand final runners-up Kroton Hela Wigmen. Despite its team Blue going down 18-10 in the first match against Wigmen’s team one (the Probables), the following match saw team Red fighting bravely only to go down 4-0 against a fancied and experienced Wigmen Team two (the Possibles) – something the Central Dabaris should be proud of. “I am impressed with the boys’ defence despite going down 4-0 today (Sunday),” head coach Bagelo Ben Solien said. The double header trial matches held between the two franchises was witnessed by a vocal crowd that packed the Bava Park. Many of the Dabaris’ fans and supporters left for home satisfied that Central Province now has a formidable side and is set to improve before their opening game of the Digicel Cup season in April. The journey will certainly be a tough one for them, however, Solien said they will take one step at a time and improve as time goes by. “Given the performance today (Sunday), I am truly impressed with the defence the boys put up today especially with team red going up against an experienced Wigmen’s team two that had many of the experience players from the Digicel Cup in the side,” Solien said. Dabaris put on a class performance in the first game against Wigmen’s team two only to go down in the final 20 minutes after leading 10-6 in the best part of the three quarters. The match was played 20 minutes in quarter intervals with bone crunching tackles, brick wall defence and some entertaining flair of fast following football also displayed on the day. “It’s a good hit-out for us and hopefully, we have one more trial match against Gulf Isou before trimming the squad down,” Solien said. “After this trial today, we will trim down the squad to 30 and have one more trial before announcing our squad. However, we would also like to keep the boys that will be dropped from the squad and they will remain with us for development purposes.” Asked to make a comment on their first trial, Wigmen’s head coach Charlie Wabo said they were not allowed to speak to the media until their season’s launching next month. Wigmen’s chief executive officer Patrick Talu Wundai said the team is expected to have some more trial matches before finalising their squad for the 2020 Digicel Cup season.
