Protesters hit streets after claims of stepped-up immigration raids

first_img Do you see a typo or an error? Let us know. Published: February 10, 2017 10:23 AM EST Protesters hit streets after claims of stepped-up immigration raids LOS ANGELES (CBS) Protesters blocked an entrance to a freeway in downtown Los Angeles Thursday night following a demonstration against what they said are stepped-up immigration raids across Southern California, reports CBS Los Angeles. The group held a vigil at the downtown office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. on Alameda Street. After the event, about 100-150 people moved to the freeway entrance.Police were present, but did not appear to making any efforts to move the protesters. There were no indications of violence or arrests at the event.ICE told CBS News claims form activists of more than 100 arrests or detentions in several L.A.-area cities are “grossly exaggerated.”ICE said any raids conducted recently were “routine” and “ongoing” — in other words, not related to national political events.“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officers conduct enforcement actions every day around the country and here in Southern California as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to uphold public safety and border security. Our operations are targeted and lead driven, prioritizing individuals who pose a risk to our communities,” the agency said.“Examples would include known street gang members, child sex offenders, and deportable foreign nationals with significant drug trafficking convictions. To that end, ICE’s routine immigration enforcement actions are ongoing and we make arrests every day.”But state Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, said he had heard reports of additional ICE raids and is seeking more information from federal officials.“There are reports that ICE today executed raids across Southern California. I have asked federal officials to disclose how many children, men, and women they have detained; what the processing time will be; what the rationale is for their detention; and I asked that everyone be offered access to an attorney,” de Leon said.“It is now clear the Trump administration is not concerned with public safety, they are only focused on ripping hard-working men, women, and children from their families and communities. Mass deportations will not make us safer; instead they will simply undermine our state’s economy.”The ACLU of Southern California said it had also heard reports of stepped-up immigration raids. Conte backs misfiring Morata after derby draw

first_img Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook Embed from Getty ImagesAntonio Conte defended Alvaro Morata after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal and backed the striker to rediscover his scoring touch.Having squandered chances in Saturday’s thrashing of Stoke, Morata missed more opportunities at the Emirates Stadium despite being put through on goal.AdChoices广告“It is not a lucky period for him,” said Blues boss Conte, whose side were denied victory by Hector Bellerin’s injury-time equaliser.“He had chances to score, but this is football. I’m very happy for his commitment and the commitment of all my players.Embed from Getty Images“He worked really hard for the team and this is the most important thing for me.“Of course it is important to score because when you score your confidence is up and otherwise it is down. But he is young and needs to continue to work.“The only thing I can say to him is to continue to work and to stay calm. If he continues to work in this way the goals will arrive.”Conte was bitterly disappointed Chelsea were unable to hang on for the win after coming from behind to lead against the Gunners.Embed from Getty ImagesAfter Jack Wilshere put Arsenal ahead, Eden Hazard equalised with a penalty and Marcos Alonso made it 2-1 before Bellerin struck.Conte said: “I think this was an exciting game for people who watched, but less for us. When you are winning and there are two minutes left, you have to win.“To draw with a great team like Arsenal could be a good result, but at the end of the game there is disappointment.“I’m not angry. Angry is a strong word. I know the players will also be disappointed. It was a good performance with good intensity.” See also:Chelsea denied by late Arsenal equaliserArsenal v Chelsea player ratingsConte backs Morata after missed chancesChelsea complete £15m signing of BarkleyChelsea must show ‘great patience’ with Barkley – Contelast_img read more

Club make ‘new contacts’ with Tottenham player’s entourage – Belief ‘important…

first_imgAs we all know, Inter are interested in Christian Eriksen, and Tottenham are making life relatively difficult for the Italian side with their demands. A deal in January would cost upwards of €20m, which the Serie A outfit don’t want to pay for a player whose contract expires in June, and yet they aren’t ready to give up on him altogether.Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday claim that Tuesday saw Inter reach out for ‘new contacts’ with Eriksen’s entourage, during which things were made clear. The Italians have put forward a contract of €7.5m/year until 2024 for the Denmark international, but Tottenham remain the biggest hurdle. The London side, clearly wary of losing one of the best players (on his day), still want €20m for him, while Inter are only prepared to pay half that, or €10m.Embed from Getty ImagesGazzetta explain that Martin Schoots, the player’s agent, is now on a mission to try and close the deal, while in Milan, there is an ‘air of relaxation’, knowing the ‘long-awaited message’ can arrive at ‘any moment’.In fact, the newspaper state ‘there are those who swear an important blitz can happen today, heading towards London’.This is all echoed in Corriere dello Sport, who explain there’s a chance Schoots could be in Milan on Wednesday to try and get a deal over the line, as contacts are expected to take place in search of an agreement on a contract and commissions. They also believe Spurs are asking for €20m, and the key to getting a deal done in January could be some sort of exchange with Matias Vecino, although Inter do value the Uruguayan above €20m, meaning Tottenham would have to add a little on top. It’s still ongoing, and even if it doesn’t get done until the summer with Eriksen joining Inter on a free, there’s still a fair bit of work to be done.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameBuild a City, Trade With Your Neighbors, Play With Your FriendsForge of Empires – Free Online GameUndo聽多多 Hearmore.asia1969年前出生的香港居民現可免費試戴頂尖的歐洲助聽器聽多多 Hearmore.asiaUndoRaid: Shadow Legends | Free DownloadEven Non-Gamers Are Obsessed With This RPG Game (It’s Worth Installing!)Raid: Shadow Legends | Free DownloadUndoSmart Tech TrendOver 55?
